Hoppin’ John will be playing a Halloween date at Chris’ Jazz Cafe. At first this was in the books as a much anticipated Friday at one of our favorite local spots. But let’s face it, we don’t get many chances to play a Friday on Halloween at a great room like Chris’. So, we decided to make the most of it. The band will be fully costumed and plenty scary.
Mike has 8, count ’em, 8 new tunes in the sets. Some tunes, like The Mooch and Is You Is, are familiar. Others, like the far-away chestnut from the John Kirby Band, called Zoomin’ at the Zombie and Queer Notions by Fletcher Henderson, are quirky, dark and lovable. Also in the set are a couple drum and trumpet features from Raymond Scott as well as an iconic Screaming’ Jay tune.
So come out and celebrate a holiday that speaks to the spirit of fun and macabre adventure. We’ll do our best to make it swing!
